“I literally don't have words for how amazing the CEC and Dr. Sinervo have been for me. It has literally been life changing after suffering with this disease for 13 years. I was finally able to find a place where my concerns mattered and where I was truly treated like a patient. Dr. Sinervo and all of the staff were genuinely concerned about my wellbeing and always made time to listen and help me in any way possible…Dr. Sinervo is a life changer.“

CEC Medical Director Dr. Ken Sinervo is known worldwide not only as an expert endometriosis surgeon, but more importantly, as a humble, compassionate doctor who truly cares for all of his patients from every walk of life and every corner of the globe.
He has won countless awards for his dedicated service and is known to always go well above and beyond for all those in his care - and for the worldwide endometriosis community at large. He is honest about expectations and outcomes, and Dr Sinervo is selflessly dedicated to improving lives any way that he can for as many people with endometriosis as he can on a patient-centered basis. As a result, he is much beloved by the global endometriosis community.

"Dr. Sinervo is the best! He is compassionate, knowledgeable and all around amazing!
He and his team made my life so much better. I'm so thankful for him."

Dr. Sinervo considers it a blessing and privilege to work with his thousands and thousands of patients from nearly 70 countries. A world-class Board-Certified surgeon, he also serves as a committed teacher and mentor. He is respected by patients, staff and peers alike, and leads his team by example through high integrity and dedication to true patient care. He is the winner of countless patient awards and peer recognition, including being named to IAOBGYN’s list of “Top Obstetricians & Gynecologists from around the World” and receiving “Top Doctor,” "Top 10 Doctors," "Most Compassionate Physician," "Patient's Choice," "Best in Atlanta" and countless other honors. He has been awarded, for 7 years in a row, the Vitals.com "Patient's Choice" honor - a distinction earned by less than 1% of all physicians in the U.S. He was also previously elected to serve as Vice Chairperson, and later the Chairperson, of the Endometriosis & Reproductive Surgery Special Interest Group (SIG) of the AAGL, the world's leading association for Minimally Invasive Gynecology. Dr. Sinervo maintains, however, that the greatest reward of his work is to be able to make a positive impact on the quality of life for all the individuals he treats. He considers himself extremely fortunate for the opportunity to serve his diverse patient population through a combination of surgery, continuous care and compassion for their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

"My husband and I were reminiscing about how much my life has changed since having surgery with Dr. Sinervo seven years ago. That surgery was my 14th and FINAL surgery I would need to close the painful chapter of endometriosis forever. This man gave me my life back and I am eternally grateful for his dedication to his profession.  Three years ago, I decided to return to college at the age of 44 and get a degree to work in the healthcare sector. I am proud to say I will be starting my new career as a respiratory therapist on Monday. I want Dr. Sinervo to know that this new career path would not be possible--and never considered--if not for the complete turn around I experienced after having surgery with him. God is good and I am forever grateful!"

Among the few Board-Certified, advanced gynecologic surgeons in the world who focus solely on excision of endometriosis and related pelvic pain gynepathologies, Dr. Sinervo joined the CEC in 2001 and has served at the head of the Center since 2011. A native of Ontario, Canada, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, a Junior Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology in the United States, a member of the Society of Obstetrics & Gynecology in Canada, and a Fellow of the AAGL, wherein he previously completed an advanced MIGS Fellowship in Pelvic Endoscopy. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario in Canada with Honors in Psychology and was awarded his MSc there as well. He completed medical school at the University of Toronto and served his Residency at the University of Calgary. After completing an advanced minimally invasive gynecologic and endometriosis surgery Fellowship in the United States, he was given the opportunity to stay in the USA and focus primarily on the disease at one of the few Centers of Expertise dedicated to endometriosis care in the world.

"The most amazing doctor and surgeon I could have ever asked for.
I got surgery from him in 2018 and it changed my life for forever."

Dr. Sinervo has been awarded countless scholarships for his academic performance, including the Dr. Fred Douglas Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Medicine from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and a Medical Research Council of Canada Scholarship. In addition, he was the recipient of the University of Western Ontario Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Research Day Award two years in a row - a rare accomplishment. Dr. Sinervo was also previously selected to serve as a Visiting Professor under the auspices of the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services, wherein he presented a series of course lectures and Grand Rounds to residents, physicians and industry during his visit, ranging from pathophysiology to treatment of endometriosis, including rare and complex abdominopelvic and cardiothoracic cases.

As CEC Medical Director and an advanced gynecologic surgery Fellowship Preceptor, Dr. Sinervo also devotes countless hours to the training and education of tomorrow’s surgeons. Applicants from around the world seek to benefit from his tutelage, including but not limited to former CEC Fellows hailing from such institutions as the Center for Advanced Gynecology, Kaiser, Saint Louis University Medical Center, the Mayo Clinic, the University of California at San Francisco, Hurley Medical Center, Riverside Health System, St. Peter's University Hospital, University of Oklahoma College of Medicine/Health Sciences Center, Universitary Hospital de Samaritane-Santa Fé Bogotá (Colombia), Johns Hopkins, LuccaHealth Specialty Medical Center (Ghana) and many others. He also consults for various institutions and remains extensively involved in both the patient and professional sectors, contributing his compassionate expertise to various endeavors to advance disease awareness and education. He is routinely called upon by the media, leading consumer and professional health publications for his experience in endometriosis and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

"CEC was the answer to our prayers. Dr. Sinervo and his staff took excellent care of me, even post op. After two frustrating surgeries with my regular OB/GYN, we started looking for a solution that was more effective than the normally recommended ablation surgery followed by rounds of extreme hormonal treatments. We found out about CEC through the Facebook Group. Don't be discouraged by gynecologists who are still doing things the old way and are not interested in learning about specialists like Dr. Sinervo. They are not worth your time. I had fairly severe endometriosis for over a decade. Seven months after surgery with CEC, we conceived. Thank you, CEC!"

Most important to Dr. Sinervo, however, is caring for his patients on a continuous basis. As one CEC mom wrote: “Dr. Sinervo performed surgery on my daughter 5 years ago for stage 4. We had tried all other interventions and had had 2 other surgeries including section of intestines being removed and one of her ovaries being removed before finding the Center. This was her 3rd surgery in 3 months. He assured us he could remove all endo. It has been 5 years. She has been trying to get pregnant and another endometrioma returned on the other ovary…[her obgyn] didn't feel hopeful. We immediately called Dr. Sinervo…and he was not only able to save her ovary but did not find any more endo after 5 years except one small spot where the other ovary was. Thank you, Dr. Sinervo and to your wonderful staff for dealing with a frantic mother, even though she's grown and married.”

A noted author and speaker, Dr. Sinervo has many abstracts, publications and presentations to his credit. He remains an active, contributing member of many professional medical and healthcare societies including the AAGL, and is routinely featured in leading consumer and professional health publications. He is also pleased to volunteer as a Medical Advisor to various health and endometriosis organizations. He is featured in both of the groundbreaking "EndoWhat?" documentaries, in the Northside Hospital endometriosis PSA, on the Ivanhoe News PSA Broadcast, “Ending Endometriosis” and in countless other resources. Dr. Sinervo is routinely sought out by his colleagues and peers for referral, particularly for severe/complex cases and extrapelvic disease. To that end, he treats among the highest number of thoracic endometriosis cases in the United States annually, and regularly teaches courses on thoracic/diaphragmatic and bowel endometriosis at the annual AAGL Congress on Minimally Invasive Gynecology, where he has also previously been elected to perform live surgery of complex endometriosis during Congress proceedings, as well as in many other professional program settings. Dr Sinervo is also a principal author of the current Endometriosis Consensus to improve diagnosis and care for the disease.

On gold-standard surgery for endometriosis, he says, "Through the constant refinement of surgical technique, it is possible to remove all endometriosis. We try to be as conservative as possible with an individual's reproductive organs while aggressively removing all visible manifestations of endometriosis, no matter where present. This can be done in an effective, safe manner. When done Laparoscopically, it allows the patient to return to normal function quickly and comfortably. There are very few limits to what can be done via Lap; there are few indications today for large incisions.”

As such, he performs complex dissections with the Laparoscope, which often provides a better exposure of the natural planes of the organs than a large incision does. With the aid of the magnification that the scope provides, even the subtlest forms of endometriosis can be appreciated. What was once described as 'microscopic endometriosis' can actually often be seen with today's equipment, if a surgeon is well skilled in disease recognition. He carefully examines all areas for endometriosis and removes only that tissue needing to be removed.  When excision is used meticulously, a patient has a lower chance of recurrence of endometriosis and can regain quality of life - something that missing from non-resection surgeries which leave disease behind. "Though conscientious follow-up with our endometriosis patients, we can give excellent estimates of recurrence rates, pregnancy rates and information on improved quality of life following excision. This is a valuable tool in the management and counseling of our patients," says Dr. Sinervo.

His approach to high quality, meticulous excisional surgery and the dedicated volume of endometriosis patients he serves also makes Dr. Sinervo and his Center an ideal research partner, sought after for participation and biospecimen capture and submissions in a number of genetic and biological studies wherein the CEC serves as co-investigator. Currently, he is a lead investigator in a groundbreaking tissue study seeking to validate the non-invasive diagnosis of the disease.

"This month is 13 years since my surgery with Dr. Sinervo at the CEC. I still say it was the best decision I have ever made for my health. I am STILL symptom-free, and beyond grateful that I made the choice to go to Atlanta. Dr. S is compassionate, thorough, and listened to me when no other doctors would. I suffered for years and the relief after surgery was incredible. THANK YOU! Everyone I meet who has endo gets a recommendation from me to get to the CEC as soon as they can."

Dr. Sinervo will listen to you, validate your pain and help you find resolve. As one patient wrote: "Dr. Sinervo is truly a miracle doctor. My health issues and concerns have been pushed aside for 11 years. Every year I had increasing pain that was hindering my day to day life. Countless times I had to cancel plans I had with friends or call off from work because I physically could not move without excruciating pain all while doctors told me it wasn't as bad as I was making it out to be or flat out denied any issue I had. I had lost all hope on having a normal life and considering a family for my future. Dr. Sinervo gave me my life back! He gave me a chance to actually live again, enjoy life again. From the moment I walked in his office I was greeted by very nice staff and knew I would be taken care of. His staff is phenomenal and great at making sure every need is taking care of and every question is answered. Dr. Sinervo and his staff gave me what everyone else said wasn't possible. He rid my body of endometriosis early this month and although it hasn’t been long I already feel so much better than I have in years. He is worth every penny it costs and every mile it takes to travel to him. He is truly the best of the best!"

Dr. Sinervo leads his Center by example, instilling compassion, integrity, caring and enduring dedication in his whole team. He says, "I find it extremely rewarding to be able to make a positive impact in the quality of lives of the patients that we treat. So many patients from all walks of life have been given such dismal prospects and limited choices. To be able to offer our endometriosis patients another alternative through the excision of their disease through Laparoscopic techniques, and to see the long-lasting effects, makes what we do so worthwhile.”
